Sandford Farm Park
Nestled deep in a well established residential community, Sandford Farm with its walnut grove, heritage home, and rustic outbuildings, is a strong reminder of the agricultural past of this part of Mississauga. When the last resident of the farm sold the derelict property to the City, an opportunity for a great and unique neighbourhood park was born.
Harrington McAvan Ltd. was retained by the City of Mississauga in 2010 to provide a full range of landscape architectural services, from concept development through contract administration.
The end result combines a traditional park complete with soccer fields, artificial turf cricket pitch, senior and junior playgrounds, basketball half-court, and multi-car parking, with a preserved heritage woodlot and remnant building foundation.
The original outbuildings which could not be preserved, were delineated with square cut limestone corner markers. The immense collection of large boulders found on site was used to create a farm wall with seating area overlooking the sports fields. The main entry is playfully announced with another nod to the history of the site, a pair of tracks from a farm tractor, impressed in concrete and passing by a new "corner stone".
Sandford Farm Park has was nominated for a 2011 Mississauga Urban Design Award.
